Best format is the SE 2 DVD Set. It's 16/9 enhanced and in the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio of the film, and can be purchased either Individually or as part of The Essential Steve McQueen Collection Box Set.
Special Features:
Commentary by Director Peter Yates. Two Feature-Length Documentaries: The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing, and Steve McQueen: The Essence of Cool. Also includes the Vintage Featurette: Bullitt: Steve McQueen's Commitment to Reality, and the Original Theatrical Trailer.

There is also a "Bullitt - Limited Edition Collector's Set" which claims to comes with 8 Original Limited Edition Lobby Cards, Exclusive Limited Edition Senitype, Original One Sheet Movie Poster (27" by 40") and an Original Shooting Draft Script by Alan R. Trustman and Harry Kleiner.
(I question the Original One Sheet Movie poster claim, as most Bullitt Original One Sheets are much more expensive than the asking price for this entire DVD set).

The Story
Frank Bullitt (McQueen) is put on assignment to protect a powerful underworld figure who is about to snitch on his cronies in a big court case. But things start going very wrong from the beginning, as the bad guys seem to know way to much about the police departments secret operation.

Bullitt (much to the angst of his superiors) is determined to get to the bottom of the case, even if it means bucking the system and getting on the wrong side of powerful political figures who have vested interests in the case.

The Cast
Jacqueline Bissett.
Jacqueline Bissett
Robert Vaughn (from The Magnificent Seven) is excellent as an antagonistic politician who wants to either command or crush the rebellious Bullitt. Simon Oakland plays Bullitt's tough but fair police boss. Jacqueline Bissett is absolutely beautiful and convincing in her role as Bullitt's wife/girlfriend. McQueen regular Don Gordon is good as Bullitt's police partner. Robert Duvall also puts in an appearance in one of his early film roles.
The car chase
The famous Ford Mustang.
McQueen in Ford Mustang This is the film that featured the extremely famous and groundbreaking car chase sequence between the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Charger. Steve McQueen did a lot of the driving in this, but he was also assisted by stunt drivers in some scenes.
