|Up until recently it was generally believed that this Steve McQueen owned 1969 Porsche 911S Coupe (currently as of 2007 owned by Steve's son Chad)
was the same car that Steve's character Michael Delaney drives in the opening scenes of Le Mans, however
a new (2007) book, McQueen's Machines: The cars and bikes of a Hollywood icon, has shown this to be untrue.|
McQueen's Machines author Matt Stone explains:
"A lot of folks have mistakenly identified the Porsche 911S that Chad owns as the car used in the opening sequences of Le Mans. Even Chad wasnít sure. The truth is that Chadís car is a í69, and the movie car is a í70. Itís an easy mistake to make, as both cars are the same model and color, and just a year apart."
Matt on the history of Steve's '69:
"McQueen bought the Ď69S new and it has lived its entire life in Southern California. He willed it to Terry upon his passing, and when she died, it went to Chad."
